The Web Technologies Group has remained one of the most progressive parts of student government at the Rensselaer Union since its creation in 2006. The Web Tech Group, or WTG, builds websites. Duh. But WTG members do a whole lot more than that. At any given time, we might be coding web crawlers, designing new ways of interacting with financial data, soldering PCBs, or assisting staff members with recommendations for flat panel televisions. We love the Union and everything it represents, and try to make RPI a better place for everyone.

The list of projects being undertaken within the WTG may be expansive, but our greatest success remains Concerto, a popular digital alternative to conventional advertising that has been adopted by hundreds of students, staff members, and faculty since its inception in 2008. We love open source software and good product design, and Concerto combines both into a rather compelling digital signage platform. As we move forward with releasing Concerto under an open source license, we aim to ensure that RPI is not the only place in the world running our software. If you're interested in using Concerto in your own corner of the world, drop us a line.

Our group was founded by August Fietkau, Brian Michalski, and Brian Zaik in 2006, but since then we have grown to over ten people. We are also supported by a rather long list of most amazing people, including the Union administrative staff (and our good friend, Director of the Union Rick Hartt '70), Student Senate, Union Executive Board, and all the other students and staff who make life in Student Government and the Union as incredible as it is.

If you're interested in joining our eclectic team, don't feel like you need to be something, such as a computer engineer or web designer. We deal with a wide variety of technologies and are always looking for like-minded people who simply want to have a great time working on projects that have serious impact on the RPI community. We're in the Student Government Suite of the Rensselaer Union (Room 3120) practically every day and night. Stop by and introduce yourself, or send us one of those electronic mail thingamabobs.
